Mirrors (Espejos) is a work that arises as the result of a creative project that that tackles the text-music relationship, taking as a conceptual core the dialectic presence-absence and as a processual core the extrapolation of the structure of the text to the structural composition of the music. The compositional approach starts from the idea of using two concrete poems by the writer Octavio Armand as sketches, from which the structural configuration of the text can be extracted and re-presented in the music. The selection of the poems arises from the link that they present with certain graphic scores of various 20th century composers where the spatial relationship between the objects can determine various musical parameters.
If the work wants to mirror the text, then the presence of the text in the music must have the structure of an absence.
"Mirrors" tackles the link between text and music by including within its structural construction the central concept of the two selected poems, a concept that is intimately linked to the functioning of language; this concept is that of presence-absence. To account for this concept, the work uses a methodology that is fundamentally based on the absence of materiality of the text, which gives rise to the presence of a new material (sound) that functions as a supplement; in this way the work returns a sound re-presentation of the formal structure of the poems, but stripped of its original textual materiality.
