The End of Greatness is a term referring to a cosmological scale of observation at which the observable universe becomes isotropic, which is a fancy way of saying that it looks the same in all directions.
This piece is nowhere near large enough to be an attempt at evoking this concept. If anything, it is a brief musical commentary about my brain's attempt to comprehend such a thing - if that makes any sense.
The piece itself was not composed for a particular instrument, just a "solo wind instrument". Also, the piece itself does not indicate specific pitches per se (it does indicate which indeterminate notes should be played a quarter-tone out of tune) and only some of the time refers to specific rhythms. In spite of the latitude this seeming lack of specificity might suggest, the piece is actually quite demanding and utilizes a broad range of techniques.
