- Program Notes
- String Quartet No.1 on Việt Themes was my first ethnomusicological adventure into my own heritage. The piece mostly uses themes from traditional đà n bầu music, with two meldoies from a contemporary Vietnamese-American singer/songwriter, one original melody by me, and a recurring rhythm from traditional Vietnamese court drumming. Short poems, also by me, accompany each movement, evoking the pastoral themes ubiquitous in Vietnamese music, as well as pointing towards the catalyst of my own interest in this work.
