Program Notes
Mans Enceses (Burning/Flaming Hands) is written based on the poetic image from verses by Vicent A. Estellés, where he describes a traditional dance (A Bolero in l'Alcúdia) in which young couples are restricted in showing their love in public, with an evident yet socialized repression of passion through the dance and its standards. I sought to reflect that image of restraint, of holding back movement, creating moments of saturation that overflow into motion and, ultimately, into more "dance-like" situations. In a way, this piece is also a dance from the perspective of the interaction between the three musicians, who constantly alternate between different roles, much like in a traditional bolero. The piece was written in the context of Klassenarbeit, a training program by Ensemble Recherche, and it could almost be said that I wrote it in close collaboration with the three musicians, through a progressive, hands-on crafting of the material.
