A Flower in the Pavement

A Flower in the Pavement is an intensely personal cycle of seven miniatures for piano trio that reflects the experience of navigating my trans identity and processing gender dysphoria. This relationship is multifaceted: sometimes it manifests as a visceral reaction to my own body, other times as a deep sense of hollowness and sadness reflecting on the lack of common childhood experiences shared by cisgender women. The composition served as a vital tool for processing these emotions, charting a journey that begins with my state of mind at the time of writing and develops into a future I was determined to manifest.

The symbolic backbone of the piece is rooted in the powerful imagery of a common weed—a flower—growing through a concrete sidewalk, tirelessly enlarging the cracks as it pushes toward the light. This brutalist metaphor became a potent symbol of resilience, beauty, and strength: that such a small, seemingly unwanted plant could flourish despite the removal of all nourishment, and in doing so, break down the rigid walls containing it.
