This quartet is based on a few ideas I was thinking a lot about in the summer of 2023: horizontal space, nature and the natural world, and folk music. As a younger violinist, I spent a lot of time playing folk music, especially fiddle music from the American south and Appalachia. Some time in Western North Carolina, where so much of that style was developed, gave me a chance to return to that sound. This quartet is something of a love-letter to American folk and fiddle, and an exploration of the things that music tends to value: open space, simplicity, repetition, and a connection to the natural world.
