- on what grounds i. prelude ii. chorale iii. courante iv. gigue v. chaconne vi. epilogue Taking as a starting point the Suite of the French Baroque, this set of pieces is designed to be modular, performable in a variety of orders and configurations. Each of the movements references a particular archaic form (gigue, chorale, etc.) while also exploring the idea of ‘ground’ in different ways: most obviously in the literal ground bass of the chaconne, but also in other cycles returning to a fixed point, collections of harmonies derived from a single pitch, or variations on a specific musical interval. The overtone series, and its inverse the undertone series, are also considered musical ‘grounds’ here. It’s not always clear whether those grounds are steady, familiar, or whether they are in fact above or below.
