A black hole is a finite region of space inside which there is a concentration of mass high enough to generate a gravitational field from which no particle can escape.
The cosmic sink is capable of devouring any object that passes close enough to the radius of action of its gravitational field, from atoms to a star.
These celestial bodies have fascinated scientists and science fiction writers alike. If we were to travel inside a spaceship falling into a black hole, what would we see during the journey? What would happen once inside the event horizon? Would we survive as we entered the singularity hidden at the centre of the hole?
These are the questions on which the piece is based, and the answers to them, the way in which it has been constructed: if we were to look back, we would contemplate the universe, accelerating at breakneck speed, watching stars and galaxies being born and dying. At the same time, we would watch as our spaceship would slow to a near halt at the edge of the event horizon, and we would finally enter the hole, where the singularity would wait impassively to tear us apart.
