- Program Notes
- To Paint the Bigger Picture was written for the Miami University Symphony Orchestra as a part of their 120th anniversary season.
The title represents taking a look at something and looking at the overall perspective, not necessarily at all of the individual details. The orchestra has been at Miami for several years, and while one can look at every performance individually, the bigger picture is the value that this orchestra brings to its musicians. The supportive nature of the group allows each of its musicians to grow, and it has been an exhilarating part of my undergraduate studies at Miami University.
While this piece is quite short, its structure paints an entire world. Throughout the changes in timbre and several modulations, the listener can focus on a constant ostinato that guides them through the music, thus providing a clear path to follow.
