- Program Notes
- The title Spectral Chorale refers to the musical movement of Spectralism, as well as the folklore of the spectre, or ghost. The piece uses sliding sine tones (often used in film and media to represent the paranormal) to outline a chorale in the style of 17th century counterpoint. The linearly sliding contrapuntal lines agitate the snares of the drums, providing the effect of the instruments being acted upon by an unseen force.
The piece was written for the UofT percussion ensemble, under the direction of Ryan Scott and Aiyun Huang, marking the end of my residency with the ensemble.
