This piece is an illustration of a moment in my life in which I struggle with depression on a daily basis. It hasn’t always been like this and it likely won’t always be this way, but it is now. I regularly deal with intrusive thoughts like an antagonist criticizing every move I make – not offering a correct direction, but preventing me from executing any action, paralyzing me. The conclusion I have come to is that, for the moment, all that matters is that I keep moving forward and keep searching for remedies. The remedies themselves often don’t offer the solution I hope for, but it is the act of searching that keeps me moving forward. By seeking out better days, my resolve is strengthened and I am able to make it through the day. This piece not only is a personal expression, but it is also a manifestation of the process it describes. By working on it and fleshing out the ideas it contains, I have continued on, I have affirmed my identity, and I have been able to hold on. This description wanders about just like the music, but my hope is that through my text and my music, the performers and audience members gain an impression of the mental space in which I have found myself in recent years.
