- Between Two Trios (2022) is a short study that explores the relationship between two string trios tuned differently: one live trio at 400 or 441 Hz and another pre-recorded trio that is 50 cents (one microtone) below 440 Hz. Composed for Kirkos Ensemble as part of a string trio concert at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, I aimed for the material throughout the piece to be singular and somewhat austere. I incorporated only small amounts of harmonic movement at periodic moments to allow time for the audience to perceive and experience the tensions between the live and pre-recorded trios. At the time of composing, my focus was on creating music that loosely emulated or at least nodded to the full-bodied timbres and persistent textures prominent in a lot of 1990s and 2010s shoegaze guitar music. As my way of paying tribute to a genre that I loved as I was developing as a composer, I chose to use incessant tremolos and open strings in all six parts as the basis of the harmony to create my very own 'Wall of Sound'.
