- “Antique Navigation” (2021) is music for solo cimbalom, a Hungarian chordophone (the instrument family to which the American hammered dulcimer also belongs). The piece is dedicated to Nicholas Tolle, in appreciation for his efforts to demystify the cimbalom for composers. Some years ago, I visited an antique shop with a room in which every inch of the wall was covered with fascinating historic maritime navigation instruments. I imagine that each of these diverse, well-weathered instruments had its own hidden stories from its past life in charting the course of ships. This piece is one of those stories.
