- About the Piece: Since delving into composition, my fascination with non-Western classical music, particularly Arabic classical music, has been a driving force. Arabian Rhapsody emerged from this interest in 2019, when I was 15. However, the initial rendition of the composition lacked coherence, resembling more a haphazard, disingenuous, cinematic portrayal rather than an authentic representation of Arabic musical traditions. Throughout the years 2023 and 2024, a process of meticulous refinement unfolded. I embarked on a journey of revision and reorchestration, driven by a commitment to authenticity and depth. Part of this process was devoted to research of Arabic classical music, such as scales and rhythmic grooves but also immersing myself in the sounds of Arabic classical compositions. This endeavor not only broadened my understanding of Arabic musical heritage but also honed my orchestral arrangement skills, which had matured significantly since the piece's inception. Arabian Rhapsody underwent a profound transformation, evolving into a refined rhapsody characterized by seamless transitions and climactic peaks. It guides the listener through the varied landscapes of the Arab world, from the rhythmic pulses of North Africa to the enchanting melodies of the Arabian Peninsula and the azure shores of the Mediterranean. This piece remains a testament to the enduring influence of Arabic culture, inviting listeners on a captivating odyssey through its diverse and storied realms. Disclaimer: As the composer, it's essential to clarify that my background does not include any direct immersion in Arab culture, language, music, or its surrounding cultural spheres. I approach this composition with utmost respect and sensitivity, aiming to avoid any form of cultural appropriation. This piece is crafted through diligent research into Arabic music theory, including scales, melodies, and rhythms. It serves as a sincere homage to the rich heritage of Arabic music, reflecting my admiration and appreciation for its depth and complexity. While composing, I acknowledge the boundaries I've set and the artistic liberties I've taken, and I acknowledge that my interpretation may diverge from traditional norms. My goal is to approach this art form with sensitivity and reverence, striving to create a work that celebrates the beauty and complexity of Arabic musical traditions while respectfully incorporating my creative voice.
