Program Notes
Written in July 2020, this whimsical string quartet narrates a heated encounter between a dear friend and a room-invading lizard. The composition unfolds with the lizard's nonchalant entry, portrayed by playful pizzicato strings mimicking its movements and pauses, adding a touch of mystery. The protagonist's realisation of the intruder, marked by an exaggerated 'surprise' chord, sets the stage for a blistering battle as tension escalates with her preparing for the epic showdown armed with a broom - her weapon of choice. As the music progresses, we delve into a contrasting middle section depicting her internal struggles of fear, strategising, hesitation and overthinking. The final section of the quartet brings a sense of hope as she finally triumphs, capturing her elusive opponent. The victorious coda celebrates her conquest with triumphant musical motifs, concluding the musical journey on a playful note of sweet victory.
