Program Notes
"Woodlands" is a quartet piece about a depiction of someone trapped in woodlands, awakening in a vast forest, full of life. However, lost, they search for a way home. The protagonist is discovered by the people of the woodlands who take them to their village where the protagonist is presented to the village's "Great Leader"— an authoritarian and mystical being to the people of the woodlands. The Great Leader and fellow people perform a dance of patronage. But what for? The village and the Great Leader call for a celebration of the protagonist's arrival. Loud, bombastic energy fills the leafy canopy as chants and yelling and dancing happen, all surrounding the protagonist. Something tells the protagonist to leave... Distrust and unease... The protagonist runs... and runs... and runs... The woodlands refuse to let them leave... they must fight out. Why could such a beautiful place be filled with such evil?
