- "slacken" is one of continuing set of loosely interrelated short piano pieces entitled "vestibulations," and was composed for Sarah Bob. The "slackening" referenced in this brief composition's title occurs as the arpeggiated chord voicings heard in the opening gradually become more and more spread out across the keyboard, as if incrementally being released from one's grip, until they reach the extremes of register. It's a one-way journey, as the once-graspable figures cannot be recovered.
