- Program Notes
- The multiple sound capacities of the oboe, exploited with greater force in the last couple of centuries, have generated a new imaginary of the instrument, which is no longer understood only as a mere “melodic highlighter”, or a monophonic instrument with comfortable tessitura and good agility. melodic, but today the oboe has also emerged as a tremendous generator of rhythmic and polyphonic textures.
In “Cantata”, this particular potential in terms of constructing different sound textures is put to the test, through the exercise of sustaining on its own a coherent musical discourse within a form traditionally designed for vocal ensemble and accompanying ensemble.
Throughout the work, the multiphonic capabilities and timbral richness of the instrument will be presented through the 7 sections that usually build a cantata, forcing the performer to cover everything from recitatives with little (or no) melodic movement, to ornate atonal arias, and even choirs loaded with homophonic polyphonies, taking advantage of some of the multiple unique sounds of this instrument.
