State Machine is conceptual translation of the four states of matter into music. Each brief movement features a different state of matter.
The first movement realizes solids through powerful, homorhythmic material and symmetrical chords. Each player fits together to create a massive sound.
The second movement represents liquids through a flowing, harmonious pattern. The players drift further apart as the movement concludes.
The third movement evokes gases through an entirely graphic score. Each player contributes different playing techniques to create a textural soundscape.
The final movement represents the least known state of matter - plasma. Plasma is represented through sporadic, electrically charged gestures.
