Program Notes
SK(A)Y, for flute and piano, is a contemporary nocturne that operates on a musical level with two opposite concepts: the implacable structure and the unpredictable. The dramaturgy of the work follows the path of a lunar eclipse, which reveals in its evolution various forms of darkness. The structure follows a form of ABA, where the climax is a counterintuitive pianissimo, almost imperceptible, but dense, full of surprises, just like when other senses are enhanced with the disappearance of light. The ethos of the composition can be described as dark lyricism. SK(A)Y was commissioned by flutist Matei Ioachimescu and pianist Mara Dobresco, to whom this piece is dedicated.
