- This work was commissioned to be performed in the Witworth Gallerly in Manchester, UK. Inspired not by a single work of art in the Whitworth's collection but by the very space of the gallery,Ā Music AloneĀ is a meditation on loneliness and the solace that art can offer. The violinist, situated on a balcony above the audience not as a heroic figure on the battlements but as lone figure, isolated from the audience, simply playing for themselves. This is reflected in the music which is often quiet and asks for the performer to utilise tools and techniques to soften the sound creating a music more inward and reflective. The work ends with the performer asked to play the same figure ad. infinitum while simultaneously accelerating in speed and diminishing in volume, as though holding onto the music which is inevitably slipping away. The score is prefaced with the following epigraph; āMusic alone reveals both sides now. But now is predictably over. With music, alone in the memories never made.ā
