“I wrote ‘Dreaming of The Indigo Sea’ about my own experience of growing up queer and the realizations that can come along with that later in life. In the summer of 2023, I was a featured composer at the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium in Eugene Oregon. This was the first festival I had been accepted into and I was overjoyed. The festival itself was a massive learning experience for me. on one of the evenings we had off my two close composer friends; Max Mabry and Orion Overstreet, went to a small beach on the coast called “Hobbit Beach”. It was here on this beach as I looked out over the ocean during sunset that I realized that I did not identify with own gender I was assigned at birth. As the Ocean got darker it took on a purple hue all while I was processing my revelation. It took me a few months after that trip to fully accept it and to come out to my family. The first movement “Realization” explores the loneliness that inherently comes with growing up queer; the feeling of being different from your peers is a deeply isolating experience as a child. This movement also tells the story of my realization of not being a gay man but rather a trans-woman. The second movement “Acceptance” explores the joy that accepting oneself can bring. Certain sections call back to the first movement to resemble the lingering anxiety that can come with fully embracing yourself.
