- A vocal stylistic feature of Portuguese Fado is a certain kind of melodic ornamentation based on small glissandi and portamenti. Such ornaments create an image of a certain instability that contrasts with the relative stability projected by harmonic accompaniment on the Portuguese guitar.
Games for James uses a similar technique. The phrases and musical gestures in each instrument constantly project small ornaments that try to generate some conflict with what is being played on the other instrument. The harmonic structure of the piece is relatively stable, opening the field to allow the superposition of the unstable elements that the interaction between the two instruments intended to bring forward.
James was born on August 19, 2013.
