- Framing Devices was created to begin exploring the use of improvisation as a parameter in my music. Within the improvisational and indeterminate notation presented to the performer there is a spectrum of freedom. Sometimes the performer is given a small amount of freedom in how they interpret durations, sometimes the performer is instructed to develop material previously heard in the piece, and sometimes the performer is given freedom to play whatever rhythms, pitches, and techniques they choose. My hope is that this will create a greater dialogue between improvising performer and composer that will yield interesting and creative results.
