Program Notes
"Lepa Vida" (Beautiful Vida) is a slovenian mythological ballad, which was poetised by poet France Prešeren (1800-1849). The tale begins with the story of Vida, a beautiful, yet unhappy, young woman, whose marriage to an elderly man and their sick child have led to her miserable existence. One day, whilst she is washing clothes at the beach, a ship arrives with a man from a kingdom far overseas. The man claims he was sent to collect her and makes her an offer: if she departs with him, a more favorable life awaits her. As soon as they sail off, she realizes her mistake. Her family is left behind. Three weeks later, they arrive at the kingdom, where she starts serving as a wet nurse of the queen's child. In the two dialogues with the sun and moon, she discovers that her child has died, while her husband is lost in the sea, looking for her. The poem concludes with her standing at the window every day, shedding tears for her lost life.
