Technicolour Yawn (vomit rainbows) is a 6-minute work for chamber sextet with fixed electronics. The piece is a further exploration in using noisy feedback-based sounds created on a no-input mixer as the model for the instrumental writing. I improvised on a no-input mixer to produce the distorted skronky material for the fixed electronics. These improvisations were then cut up and re-arranged to produce a new complex form.
Technicolour Yawn (which I’ve Candianized by adding the u), is slang for the act of vomiting. I feel that the word and its unpleasant association pairs well with the vibrant, vicious, and sometimes disgusting music. The music is characterized by chaotic fast-paced cuts and dynamic collage textures ranging from low crunchy roars, to piercing shrieks, distorted riffs, and ambient humming static.
