At the time of beginning the composition of this piece, a hike on White Mountain in New Hampshire was undertaken. The prevalent sights of snow-covered ground and black tree trunks there sparked inspiration. These elements brought to mind the rich timbral possibilities inherent in the bass clarinet and marimba, leading to contemplation of the unique sound textures that could be crafted using these instruments.
