Program Notes
Ty—Ry! (Imperial Sunwedding), for Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven was conceived as a tribute to the avant-garde poet and visual artist who came to define the Dadaist movement. The text used for this piece can be categorized among her collected works as dealing directly with the sound of words as they are spoken or conceptualized in thought, making this an ideal poem to be set to music. As I composed this work, I found myself becoming more and more enwrapped in the sentiments behind the poetry. The absurdity of being made regal, merging with this ideological sense of perfection, and all the cultish connotations surrounding it, became an allusion to my own situation as an individual on the cusp of earning my master’s degree. (After all, a college graduation ceremony is not all too dissimilar from a cult indoctrination...) Therefore, repetition is used as a way of turning otherwise simple melodic fragments into metaphorical fish hooks for the listener, drawing them in only to morph into something much more sinister. This mixed with emotional intensity and a sense of frenzy Freytag-Loringhoven’s performance style embodied inform the aesthetic of this work.
