- Overlooked, for flute duet, took inspiration from Lida Abdul’s 16mm 2-channel film installation What We Have Overlooked (2011), currently displayed in the Tufts Art Gallery. These videos capture a man, holding a black flag, being slowly dragged underwater in a picturesque lake near Kabul, Afghanistan. This piece is a commentary on an individual and their country, and how a nation can trounce individualism. The images evoke the strength, beauty, and hollowness that served as a basis for the flute duet. The harmonics utilized, in the especially low register of the flute, and the discordant rhythmic passages, characterize the uneasy and distraught sensibilities of Abdul’s work.
