- Plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum are called the "Four Gentlemen", which are symbols of Chinese perception of objects and aspirations, and are also common themes in ancient poems, calligraphy and paintings. Through the sound and timbre set by "bamboo", and then the natural transition of the melody, the work traces the ancient people's perception of the order of time and the meaning of life across time and space. It has become a symbol and metaphor of the embrace of personality, sublimating the inner spiritual character.
The author has created four works for these four symbolsâ‘ , and "Deep and quiet bamboo" is one of them. Each piece has a different instrument arrangement, and is named after the ancients' elegant title (alias) for the "Four Gentlemen". "HanQing" is the ancient name of bamboo. The choice of an elegant name also contains the multi-layered meanings that the author ascribes to the work.
