- New Isles is a compilation of two pieces written for Piano Solo back in the first semester of 2023. I was working closely with my friend and pianist Zoé Masset, who was studying with me at the Royal Conservatoire of Liege. She needed some contemporary pieces for her main exam, and I wanted to extend my composition techniques on some solo instrument (I’ve always preferred working and writing for ensembles, or orchestras). New Isles is based on the same principle that I used in most of my scores: mixing influences from popular music with modern ideas and thoughts. The first one, God / Quasi-Mirror, is turning around and around a citation from Bon Iver’s “ 33 GOD ”, a song I fell in love with and which resonates with me during tough times of my studies. The score is virtually divided in two parts, both joining a harmonically-huge climax. The rest of the score barely has any bars, because I wanted Zoé to be able to play all the sentences as freely as she wanted to play them. Inside / Eyesight, the second piece, is based on the song “ In Sight ” from my own band ShiroKuro, an Indie-Pop Rock trio that I’ve found in 2018. This band musically represents what I’ve endured for the past 7 years of my life, going from depression to heartbreaks, and lots of questioning thoughts. “ In Sight ” was written about a girl I kinda had a crush on, but she had one on another friend of mine. So, for this piano piece, the idea was clear: strong ideas, melodism, nostalgia and love would be the main directions to follow while working on it.
