- This work has been written in the context of a collaboration between the Royal Conservatoire of Liege and the University of Liege. Both institutions work together every year to create projects mixing contemporary compositions (created by students) and other concepts chosen by teachers from the Conservatoire and the University. In 2022, we, students, worked with the Language Faculty on a not-that-well-known topic: aphorisms. Each student had to choose an aphorism written by a local poet and writer, François Jacmin, whose works has been refound and analysed for a few years by some language specialists at the University. I decided to work with the following sentence: “ Every conclusion rebuilds a postulate ” As soon as I read the sentence, I had one clear idea in my head: making a piece that was going to fluctuate between impacts (representing conclusions) and very distorded long notes (representing the building of something new). While working on this string quartet, the picture I had in mind was a glass thrown on the ground: to me, breaking a glass, in physical terms, could not be nearer the concept of conclusion than any other thing - the glass breaks The end. But how to build something new from this? How to create a new “ postulate ”? The best for me was to imagine this breaking glass caught on video, and then reversing the tape. From something very conclusive, broken, destroyed, would come something newly born, fresh and rebuild. It also means that everytime that you break a glass, and thus that an idea is over, the concept of reversing its own entropy can exist in your mind... thus, rebuilding a new idea. This is, in a way, very rhetorical, but it sums up pretty well the thinking process behind this piece, and the following work using this concept and the same musical ideas, “ Murtunut-Glasses ” (2024)
