- Program Notes
- Kalygraphea is a musical exploration of the connection between visual art and music. I am inspired deeply by the artworks of M.C. Escher, who often expresses the transitive beauty of morphology between multiple objects in his art. In Kalygraphea, I use this idea to create sound objects, or specific musical states that bleed into one another. The piece is structured using an homage to an arch form, where the first half leads to the middle of the piece, and the second half is a reversal of what was previously heard. Though I do not adhere strictly to this formal concept, all of the music in the second half of the piece is derived from the first half. The middle of Kalygraphea explores different ensemble timbres in a suspended state of dynamic musical gestures, creating a subplot within the larger structure of the piece.
