- Amyl nitrate, also known as videotape head cleaner, leather polish, room deodorizer, or even more commonly, poppers, is consumed by inhaling the fumes from the small handheld bottle.
Leather bars and bath houses are no longer the center of queer social life, and semiotics such as
the hanky code are only used in small, seemingly isolated circles. The use of poppers in our community vilified us, and we were looked at with condemnation for our perceived perversions. Poppers represent the perseverance of our community and our struggles against persecution and violence.
With this piece, I hope to illustrate the experience of using poppers. The inhale- exhale gesture in the bass clarinet reflect the consumption of poppers, the sharp rhythmic marimba imitating the intense headrush, and the heavy club beat immersing listeners in the clubs and bars in which this inhalant are popular.
