Program Notes
From my pieces, this is the one which had the most number of titles and forms during its composition process. Some of the movements were written in hours and others were left to soak for a long time. I think it's my fate to write for the saxophone, possibly the instrument that I know best. But, it's part of the job and I have to deal with it. Unfortunately, there was an event that triggered and unblocked the creative process. The news of the death of the esteemed João-Heitor Rigaud, composition teacher at the Porto Conservatory of Music. I remembered his advice, I went to the notebooks of that time, I recalled his way of playing the piano, the sudden laughs... and the first movement that was born was the Aria, in his memory. From there, the construction became clearer to me. This suite takes its form from the Baroque , with six movements and all of them are inspired to a greater or lesser extent (with some very elaborate quotes) from those dances in which the saxophone was not part, , but which would certainly be successful in the courts of Europe if it had already been invented. The work is the result of a commission from the chamber music group AiDuo, which includes fantastic musicians with whom I have already shared a stage. I'm not sure if this is what they wanted, but it's always a risk when ordering a new piece. A risk that must be praised because music is not born from heaven. Let's get the saxophone and the well-tempered piano to dance a little (no, the music is not danceable, but it would be good to finish). Work commissioned by AiDuo to commemorate its 10th anniversary and to include in the album Meeting Point. AiDuo - Artur Mendes e Iryna Brazhnik.
