- A banshee is a female spirit in Irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member, usually by screaming, wailing, shrieking, or keening.
The biggest inspiration when it came to writing this piece was Henry Cowell’s The Banshee, written in 1925. I decided to borrow some of the elements used by Cowell and reimagine them, not only musically but also conceptually.
I thought of myself being that character, that woman who is known for crying and bringing sadness. I’ve been the bad guy and the villain, I’ve been mean and a liar but I’ve also been hurted and betrayed and lied to. I’ve been everything and nothing at all at the same time and that is what this piece is about. A mirror reflecting myself as a human being, with all the different layers and with all consequences.
