- a string quartet inspired by the movements of bird wings, of flocks of birds, of the cries of birds. Originally the quartet was to have an intermezzo second movement, but the music never materialized - the idea of this movement is represented with a short pause. At the end of the first movement, the quartet effectively becomes an octet, as the musicians are required to play on both sides of the bridge at once, producing a rich texture of pizzicato and arco playing. At the end of the final movement, a hidden melody appears, played hocket-style by each musician on their open strings.
