“Our Mind is a Monkey” is a direct quote from a nun that works in a Buddhist meditation camp I went to this past summer. I was back home in Thailand for the first time in a long while, and I had decided to get in touch with my religious side and join the camp. Meditation has always been difficult for me in terms of trying to not think and have a blank state of mind. As I was having this trouble, a nun helped me understand that no matter how much we try to contain our mind and focus, it will always break through. Therefore, we must learn to acknowledge what comes and goes as well as let it flow, since ‘Our Mind is a Monkey’.
In this piece, I tried to portray (figuratively) the state of mind when meditating where there are so many thoughts running through our heads at once. When we enter the calm and meditative mind space, we might think that we gain back the sense of tranquility, but do we?
