The laws of sympathetic magic in operation: the name of the object defines its destiny. It was quite naive to expect that the piece named 'Attention Deficit Disorder' could be written through calm, thoughtful and concentrated way of work. Of course not. The piece was actually written by fits and starts, in permanent haste, with no possibility of even formulating a plan, let alone following it.
Initially I had an idea of music about too much music around us. The piece was conceived as a giant cento, a catalogue of micro-quotations from others' music, like in Bernd Alois Zimmermann's 'Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu', but with cuts even smaller.
It appeared though that 'music around us' is not only abundant. It is also too diversified, different, dissimilar. Fragments were simply failing to assemble into something comprehensible. After some unsuccessful tryouts I gave up with cento and invented all the music myself. 'I met someone who had read so little that he had to invent his own quotes from the classics', writes Stanislaw Jerzy Lec on a similar matter.
The structure, nonetheless, follows the initial intention. Musical thoughts jump, never holding on to nothing. Ideas are abandoned before any development. Fine and delicate way of expression transforms into downright circus and backwards. The avant-garde of the tik-tok age. (If it makes an avant-garde.) (If it constitutes an age.)
