- Rebonds à Deux is written as a meditation and exploration on the idea of boundaries, limits, and the act of rebounding or reverberating against them to discover new creative possibilities. Taking bar for bar the structure of Iannis Xenakis’ Rebonds a for solo percussion as its frame, my own work transforms the hypnotic push and pull of the original’s rhythms by extending them into new dimensions: in the resonant belly of the piano what was once unpitched now becomes pitched and even a single strike generates its own crystalline echoes. Among the swirl of these live vibrations, the piano is doubled and echoed itself through the pre-recorded playback, first as impossibly resonant tones and then as delayed continuations of the pianist’s material while the performer carves out chordal slabs from the surrounding acoustic ore. These changes themselves bounce back and forth, develop, and become more frequent before finally erupting into a massive sonic column as the performer and playback together hew a final chord from the Xenakis. In this cloud of sound a few more strikes are gently heard, and as the reverberant mist gradually settles so to does the music as it reaches its closing note, its concluding bounce, and fades away to silence.
