- «Ataxia» [a- ‘without’ + taxis ’order’] is the first draft of an upcoming work for English horn and live electronics, written for performer/composer Jake Gunnar Walsh. Primarily a medical term for lack of control over bodily movements, «Ataxia» delves into the musical significance of tensions between smoothness and irregularity, as well as invariance and change. These tensions are explored at different temporal scales, from the destabilization of short musical gestures, to semi-gradual, almost abrupt transitions between larger sections.
The lyrical and expressive qualities traditionally associated with this instrument are also subject to this idea, by positing less conventional, technical challenges to it.
Additionally, subtle dramatic components are introduced throughout the performance to elucidate a struggle for control between technology and the human body.
