The title 'metrognomon' is a hybridisation of ‘metronome’ and ‘gnomon’ (the part of a sundial that casts the shadow). With temporal exploration a clear focal point, the piece is an explicit and relentless questioning of the various and often conflicting ways in which pulse, metre, rhythm, and tempo relate to and interact with one another. Given the title’s emphasis on recurring units of time, the material is also structured in layers of repeating cycles. However, the resultant musical complexity acts not just as an exploration of such ideas, but also as a testament to the staggering virtuosity and technical prowess of Irvine, Ashot, Ralf and Lucas, for whom the piece was written.
