Program Notes
Viktor Valkov, piano The music of Nocturne (2023) was originally drafted to be a secondary theme in my Piano Sonata (2023). When the material failed to find a home within the sonata itself, I reshaped it into a free-standing nocturne. The piece has an AABA structure in which the A sections contain a common harmonic structure – the opening A section presents the harmonic progression by itself, while the two subsequent presentations add melody that is continually embellished as it progresses, in true Chopinesque fashion. The B section (2:16) therefore serves a transitional function, marked by a descending bass line into the lowest register of the piano.
