"Horo" takes its name from a Bulgarian communal dance performed at Weddings and other communal events in villages. It includes common features of Bulgarian folk music including irregular metres and, from a harmonic standpoint, the “Makams” which are middle eastern scales that
were brought in whilst the country was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and remained a
feature of the music afterwards, being integrated into it.
I was influenced by performances on Youtube given by Bulgarian Kaval Player “Theodossi
Spassov” who is one of the foremost contemporary players in the genre.
