The title refers to Joseph Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross. This string quartet is based on some musical ideas and gestures from Sonatas II and III of Haydn's cycle. However, these ideas take on a new form here and develop into a timbral amalgam characterised by the intensive use of harmonics.
