Notrgir

Notr’gir is a type of Armenian cursive calligraphy with a wavy style, developed over centuries and becoming popular in 18th-century scripts as a means of communication. To me, it represents the beauty of manipulating with the curves of letters, creating a sense of energy, ornamentation, and flow. The script can become wider or narrower, dynamic or soft, always retaining its peculiarity and improvisatory nature. In the piece, I use heterophonic and rhythmic structures to highlight the idea of linearity and embellishment, and I aim to transmit a “paleo” feel through rhythm, gestures and scalar elements.  This is also a process of putting down ideas on paper...(a quality which likely will lose its essence in the future, unfortunately by replacing everything with digital).
