Program Notes
This developed out of workshops with Helen Sharp and Helen Tunstall as part of the London Symphony Orchestra's Panufnik Scheme. I wanted the harp to be the harmonic backbone of the orchestra, using detuned strings as an anchor for the strange tunings. The melody of the second movement was born out of those experiments. When quarantined during the COVID-19 Crisis, I returned to these ideas. I wrote this at my partner's house, staring at the deadened street outside. With thanks to Helen Sharp, Helen Tunstall, Anne Denholm, and Bryn Lewis their guidance. The final version of this score was created with Oliver Wass, who recorded it at the University of York in 2022.
