- Program Notes
- This piece was commissioned by Avery Richards and Chloe Gardner. It focuses on passages from "The Gospel of Thomas" - itself part of the larger Nag Hammadi Library. Growing up as a Queer secular Jew, I saw and experienced religion as a cudgel with which to condemn nearly everyone, especially me and people like me. Naturally, I became deeply suspicious of anyone pushing a religious worldview. This piece is a representation of this process of reconsidering my relationship and recontextualizing my experiences with spirituality. The strophic form is representative of revisiting the same material, somewhat altered, and now with the added perspective of time and experience.
