Eloain Lovis Hübner (1993, they/them, she/her, no pron.) is a Berlin-based non-binary German composer with a particular interest in experimental sound research in the analog world, spatial and transdisciplinary formats, collaborativity and links between music practice and social, natural, technical, urban, domestic and media environments. Many of their works are in the field of artistic research or incorporate influences from the humanities, especially sociologiy and queer studies.

Eloain studied composition in Cologne, Dresden and Oslo and holds a master’s degree from the Giessen Institute for Applied Theater Studies. Eloain is part of the performance / music theater collective the paranormal φeer group (with Maria Huber & Jakob Boeckh) and works with artists from almost all disciplines such as Kapitolina Tsvetkova (sce-nography, stage direction), Raphael Jacobs (text, stage direction), Tassilo Tesche (scenography), Johannes Schropp (performance, stage direction), and others.

This has led to inter/transdisciplinary productions such as The Navidson Records (Munich Biennale, Bühnen Bern 2016), Orpheus Moments (Venice Biennale 2017), Revolutions Per Minute (Gallus Theater Frankfurt 2019), Ødipus REC. (Gare du Nord Basel, Tojo Theater Bern 2020/21), Befriending Ghosts (Volksbühne Berlin, HAU4 @ Performing Arts Festival Berlin 2021), ALICE (Espace K Strasbourg, Konzerthaus Berlin 2021/22), Loss of Signal (MS Stubnitz Hamburg, Next Level Festival Essen, BAM! Festival Berlin 2021/22), Ja, ich bin da im Shantychor! (Schwankhalle Bremen 2022), φeerroom (SPARK Festival Cologne, 49h Stimme X Festival Hamburg 2022), Yes! Yes! Yes! (HELLERAU 2023), MASSEN (Kunsthalle Bielefeld 2024) and many more. These include immersive sound/ space concepts, an online installation, durationals, music theater for children, a theory opera in game show format, participatory formats and projects with amateurs. The opera opera, opera, opera! revenants and revolutions was created for the Munich Biennale 2020, but has remained unperformed due to the Covid pandemic.

Eloain has worked with Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Decoder, LUX:NM (D), Klangforum Wien, airborne extended, Schallfeld Ensemble, NAMES (AT), Ensemble Lemniscate, Ensemble Proton (CH), Kompopolex, Spółdzielnia Muzyczna (PL), HANATSUmiroir (F), Concrète [Lab] Ensemble (PT), Arditti Quartet (UK) and many more. Vocal music plays a central role: As composer-in-residence at AuditivVokal Dresden in 2023, Eloain realized the theory opera Yes! Yes! Yes! and other works; in 2025, Vokalensemble Zürich premiered the half-hour piece deckung (versuch 1), which is based on artistic research into voices in climate protests and Bruno Latour & Nikolaj Schultz’s thoughts on ecology and society.

Recordings with the Decoder Ensemble (2019, Wergo) and the trombonist Mikael Rudolfsson (2024, Neos) were released on CD. A portrait album in the Edition Zeitgenössische Musik of the German Music Council featuring recordings by Lange//Berweck//Lorenz, AuditivVokal Dresden, Schallfeld Ensemble and airborne extended is planned for 2026. The album production n.o.t.i.o.n.s (2023) and the composer/performer program Back on Stage (2024) laid the foundation for Eloain’s own semi-improvisational practice on instruments that they “cannot play” in the classical sense.

Eloain has taught at the Academy of Performing Arts Baden-Württemberg, the Weimar University of Music, and the University of Giessen, and curated the Lower Saxony Musik 21 Festival 2021-24. Eloain has served on the speaker’s council of the Germany-wide Netzwerk Freies Musiktheater since 2023 and has chaired the Initiative Neue Musik Berlin since 2024. Awards include the 63rd Composition Prize of the State Capital of Stuttgart, the Bremen Composer's Prize, the Deutscher Musikautor*innenpreis, the Composition Prize of the City of Homburg as well as residencies at the Villa Aurora L.A., the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris, the Künstlerhof Schreyahn and the Villa Concordia Bamberg. The complete compositional œuvre is published exclusively by Topus Verlag.
