L’Atelier des Créatures Fantastiques is a composition in three sound tableaux, conceived as a journey within a visionary laboratory inspired by the pictorial imagination of Hieronymus Bosch. In this imaginary space, creatures take shape through sound, emerging from musical materials in continuous transformation.
The musical language is based on a dialogue between modal elements and more contemporary structures, where the use of ancient modes, symmetrical scales, and irregular rhythmic cells contributes to a fluid and constantly evolving sonic environment. The material is not static; rather, it unfolds through processes of gradual metamorphosis, generating tensions and contrasts between stability and instability, rhythmic impulse and lyrical suspension.
The first tableau introduces an unstable and shifting sonic figure, characterized by frequent metric changes and a dynamic timbral organization, in which the ensemble contributes to a fragmented and evolving soundscape. The second tableau reveals a more introspective dimension: a lyrical line gradually emerges from the shadows, developing within a more rarefied and controlled context until it finds its own expressive identity. The third tableau presents a more incisive and theatrical character, structured around the idea of a distorted march, where regular rhythmic elements are progressively altered, creating a sense of tension and deformation that leads to the conclusion of the work.
The piece thus unfolds as a continuous process of transformation, in which sound material is constantly reshaped, giving rise to a musical universe in perpetual motion.
